Ingredient Sensitivity
Occurs when an ingredient has an undesirable effect on an individual when ingested. Ingredient sensitivity is not the same thing as a food allergy, although both are rare. Individuals with ingredient sensitivity will generally be advised to avoid consuming foods containing the specific ingredient.
INS – International Number System
Number system that establishes an international System used for identifying food additives. Serves as an alternative to the declaration of the specific name of the additive on the list of ingredients. Developed by the Codex Committee on Food Additives, the INS can be applied to substances even if they do not have toxicological approval of JECFA.
Iron Oxide
An exempt from certification pigment derived from mineral sources. Food grade iron oxide is available in red, yellow, and black shades. Iron Oxide is an extremely stable pigment and resists degradation from heat, light, and changes in pH.
