Solutions to Address Titanium Dioxide Powder Challenges

For most food manufacturers, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) powder is the go-to white pigment solution and is used widely across many packaged food products, including confections, soups, fillings, sauces, pet food, and powdered soft drinks just to name a few. Because of its excellent heat, light, pH, and water-activity stability, TiO2 can be difficult to replace at a comparable cost-in-use.

However, regulatory bodies globally have started to question the safety of Titanium Dioxide to both consumers and production workers. This is especially true for the powdered version of TiO2. In February 2020, the EU published the classification of titanium dioxide as a suspected carcinogen (category 2) by inhalation for powder forms. It has since been declared unsafe for use as a food additive by the European Food Safety Authority. This is expected to affect the use of E171, as it is known, in other regions like Asia Pacific in a matter of time.
